5 Ways to Make Thanksgiving the Most Grateful Day of the Year
When I was a kid, Thanksgiving was THE event of the year. I remember avoiding chores at all costs and trying to sneak a peek at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade while two turkeys occupied the oven, cooking in a buttered paper bag. We always had Indian pudding, Jell-O salad, and most importantly, family and friends everywhere I looked.
These days, Thanksgiving is about high school football (Go Sachems!), backyard touch (and occasionally tackle) football with my nephews, dogs, naps, reminiscing with grandparents, and an exquisite meal.
While many consider Thanksgiving the day that officially kicks off the holiday season, it’s also a time to pause and reflect on the past year -- to be grateful for all that you have, share stories, strengthen traditions, and make new memories with friends and family.
Below are just a few tips to help you and your loved ones have the most memorable Thanksgiving yet.
1. Consider hosting this year.
It’s more fun than you might think. Feeling overwhelmed with the details? Check out our Pinterest page for some quick ideas for simple-yet-gorgeous tablescapes, including a kids table that will make the adults envious. Remember: You don’t have to go overboard to make it special! Small touches can easily personalize your table and make guests feel loved at the same time.
2. Start a new tradition.
Thanksgiving really is a time for family to reconnect. In my house, it’s tradition that during dinner, everyone shares one or two things that they are truly thankful for. The best part of this tradition has been watching my nephews mature over the years and call out things beyond being grateful for their Legos.
3. Try a new recipe.
Being from New England, our favorite Thanksgiving dessert is Indian pudding. Since the classic recipe takes awhile to cook, consider making it a few days ahead of time -- trust me, it’s just as delicious warmed up.
4. Play some games.
No, I’m not talking about the Lions or the Cowboys! If a robust game of touch football isn’t your style, board games are the perfect way to include every generation of your family in the fun. Who doesn’t love a game of Scrabble? Make multi-generational teams to keep things fair! Don’t have the game? There is still plenty of time to grab one on Amazon.
5. Remember why you cherish the holidays.
I know that family can drive us crazy sometimes, and the pressure to be the perfect hostess can take a toll. So take a deep breath, go for a walk outside, and remember what this holiday is about: gratitude!
